As Yogi Berra said, “it’s like déjà vu all over again”. Sadly the Board of Directors of the Lethbridge Lightning Hockey Team must announce the cancellation of the 2020/21 hockey season.
At a recent Ranchland Hockey League meeting, the majority of teams agreed for both the health and safety of players and fans the season would not proceed.
2020 was to be a banner year for the Lightning; hosting the Hockey Alberta Senior “AA” Provincial and for the third straight year appearing in the Ranchland Hockey League Championship.
The Board looks toward a resolution of the Covid-19 pandemic and the wishes only good health for our players, sponsors, fans and the entire community.
We look forward to the time when the Lightning can again don their blades and participate in Canada’s great game.

LIGHTNING STRIKE BRONZE
On their second consecutive trip to the Hockey Alberta Men’s Senior “AA” Provincial tournament, the Lethbridge Lightning scored a last second 3-2 win over their arch nemesis, the Nanton Palominos, to earn the Bronze Medallion on Sunday (March 31).
After going zero and three in 2018, the Lightning finished the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 2-1 record. With a 5-2 win over the host Wainwright Rustlers Thursday, a 5-2 loss to Nanton Friday and dumping Hillmond 7-4 Saturday, the Lightning finished in third place securing a berth in the Bronze Medal final Sunday.
Sunday’s Bronze final was a see saw battle with the Lightning tying the game at two with five minutes left in the third. As the clock wound down and thoughts were turning toward overtime, Devery Edmonds fed a long pass to James Price who along with Calvin Swanson broke in on the Pals netminder. Price drew the goalie to the left and deftly passed the puck to Swanson who fired the biscuit into a gaping net with under 1 second on the timer. A quick meeting of game officials followed by a point to centre ice meant the Lightning had defeated Nanton (the reigning Ranchland Hockey League Champions) to win the Bronze.
Preparations are already underway for the 2019/20 season as the Lightning will host the 2020 the Provincial Senior “AA” tournament March 26-29.
The Lightning thank all our sponsors, volunteers and the fans for your support over the past season and look forward to seeing you next season.
